You might have noticed the last few days that some comments where unrelated and where having links to other web-sites in them. They were put there wuth a spamming purpose. To get a higher rating at Google or to get you to click on the link. I don’t know how I suddenly became a target, I must have been put on a list somewhere ? Luckily WordPress held back most of the spam by not allowing more than 3 links in a comment. It’s very annoying to have to check and delete the comments made in your blog and I started looking for a method to prevent spam. (more…)

I’m getting a bit frustrated by all the news reports and reviews on the new Intel based Imac’s. They all claim that the machines ain’t as fast as Jobs promised. They all say that the speed increase isn’t 2x but more like 10%. Like the test described in details in the report from MacWorld.com. But what I notice in all the test I read is that they only test one application at a time. As far as I now those applications aren’t build for multi processor environments. Which means they don’t really take advantage of the extra processor available, like the pro applications that run on the Dual or Quad Power Mac like for instance Final Cut Pro. (more…)

I’ve got one of my Mac mini’s running for almost a month now and I’m very happy with how it’s been behaving. It does everything I want and it even allows me to use it as a router of some sort by using the “share internet” option in the Sharing panel in the System Preferences. In this manner I can use my second Mac mini as a desktop computer and surf the internet and maintain my server by using the both Airport Extreme cards to setup a wireless network. The server mini is connect to my ADSL modem using via a cable. I’ve used the Sharing panel to configure the Firewall as well , but I’m not yet very happy with it. (more…)

Completely missed it, but I got a comment from Geva who mentioned an error during compilation. When I checked the error I found out that there has been an upgrade, the latest version is 0.58 instead of the 0.57 I used when I started this setup.

The related documentation has been updated and if you want to upgrade you can just download the new source-code and run the build commands as documented. Don’t forget the command: (more…)

Spam is a very annoying experience. People try to do everything to get their stuff sold, while others try everything possible not to receive these messages. Having your own mail-server makes you vulnerable for spammers when you don’t configure your mail-server properly. Luckily the default configuration settings in Postfix make your server secure enough and don’t create an email server anyone can abuse.

One thing you would want to avoid is that regular email that you want to receive is not blocked. Spam filters check for keywords and block email based on the content of the email, this might be useful until your best friend starts boasting about his adventures with viagra via email. Before I started experimenting with spam filters I wanted to find out what else one could to reduce the amount of spam. (more…)

It’s been a while since I wrote anything, but that was because I spent some time in another country and couldn’t spend some quality time with my Mac mini’s. When I got home and turned on my monitor I saw the software update icon jumping in the dock for attention. When I read the knowledge base article describing what was included in the update it all looked quite harmless. (more…)

I’ve got the server running for some days now and I must say it’s handling the load quit well. The only thing I had trouble with migrating easily was the squirrel webmail program, it had some problems with the include path and I didn’t feel like re-installing it. I’ve received emails from people saying that I should use Roundcube for web based email, not getting squirrel to run was the perfect excuse I needed to try and install it. (more…)

I’ve started the new year with migrating everything from my old Sun Ultra 5′s who have been running my internet services for the past few years to the Mac mini. The pages you are looking at now are served from a Mac mini as it was my intention for some time. The mini is setup using my own documentation with no deviation whatsoever. (more…)
