Just a small warning for everyone still following this blog for their setup and hasn’t switched to the new DIYMacServer.com blog. There are some issues regarding compiling and installing Apache, MySQL and PHP on Leopard. Please read the Leopard blog entries there for more coverage. Read compiling Apache on Leopard, MySQL issues on Leopard and the regular documentation set for more info.

I’ve had some issues with UPS over the weekend. Where they normally would drop off packages at the neighbors when i wasn’t home, this time they didn’t. I should have received my copy on friday, but because I was out for groceries I missed the delivery. They tried again on monday but as to be expected I was at work and no delivery was made.

I called UPS to see how we could resolve the issue. The easiest solution was to pick up the package at UPS, their warehouse was not that far away. When I arrived this morning at UPS to finally pick up my copy of Leopard, only to be disappointed again. It seemed the driver forgot to leave the package and was taking it on his round again. After some negotiations with the local manager on how to resolve the issue, we decided to have it delivered at work which gave UPS a small problem. It wasn’t on the normal route so the package had to be exchanged between drivers. I got the package by the end of the day at the office. Finally.

I’ve installed it on my test mini as soon as I got home and I’m typing this blog-post in Safari 3 in Leopard. Next step is to try and install all the DIYMacserver.com stuff and see what I’ve got to o to get it working in Leopard !

Well, just returned from Ikea where I bought a little present for myself, a new swivel chair for use behind my desk at home in the study. It’s got one of those unpronounceable names “Kläppe”. My old one was also form Ikea but that one has served it’s purpose for way too long now and is ready to be recycled.

I’ve been playing with the idea of redecorating my study. As always it’s a mess and I need to organize lots of stuff on my desk which is always to small. But playing with ideas isn’t actually getting me anywhere and the new chair gives some purpose to getting things done. Who know I might even by myself a new desk and before I even now it the study has been repainted, got new shelves on the wall and…(I start looking very dreamy)

By the way, just ordered Leopard in the online Apple Store as well. I’m preparing my test server to have a partition on Leopard for testing purposes of the DIYMacServer setup.

Well, that was not expected, another update before we hit Leopard. It was followed by a security update a day later as well. You can install them without any issues related to our server software. There is however a problem reported with popping noises coming from the speakers on Intel Mac’s after installing this update. I haven’t noticed it myself but be warned.

More about the software update or the security update

What a surprise, is this the last hurdle for Leopard ? I’ve udated my PPC server and haven’t ran into any issues at the moment. Everything still is working as expected. I don’t think Intel based Macs should have any problem as it looks like our programs aren’t affected.

Check out all the improvements that where made in the knowledge base article describing the update.

It’s time again for a security update. This time it’s a pure client patch and not really server related. It fixes a security hole in Quicktime. I’ve installed it on my servers and didn’t run into any issues as I expected because of the affected components. Read more about the update here.

The software update icon was jumping in my dock again after a longer time then expected. This time I was a bit more carefull after the unexpected Postfix issues with the last update. The updates are mostly security related and I think you need to apply this asap. I didn’t notice any problems after the reboot and everything is working. Read more about the update here.

Just got an email telling me that the XCode developers tools have been update to release 2.4.1. It’s not a major upgrade, just some small improvements and bugfixes:

  • Stability and security fixes in the Xcode IDE, cctools, debugger, and compiler
  • CHUD has been updated to version 4.4.3. CHUD also releases independent from the Xcode Tools releases. Current versions of CHUD can be found at: http://developer.apple.com/tools/download/
  • The 10.3.9 and 10.4u SDKs have been updated.

The full release notes can be found here and you can download the tools from here (again it’s big 923 Mb)

Some of the users of my mailserver setup noticed a problem with postfix, they where unable to receive mail. When investigating the problem I found out that MySQL dictionary type was not supported by postfix. You can find this out by running 'postconf -m', mysql should be in the list.

It looks like the software update replaces our postfix binary with the original one. This is not listed in the knowledge base article so I didn’t know beforehand. I can’t confirm this problem is caused by the update, I need to research this or get more confirmations about it.

The problem is likely to only affect Intel macs, I haven’t installed everything on my Intel mac yet so I hadn’t noticed the problem yet but I didn’t have any problem on my G4 mac minis.

To solve the problem you need to reinstall postfix. If you still have the source tree intact on your harddrive you can do it quickly with just running a 'sudo make install'. If it’s no longer there then you need to recompile the source again from scratch.

Your existing configuration files won’t be touched so no worries there. Sorry I had not noticed this problem earlier. I’ll install my Intel mac mini asap to better understand what’s happening here and prevent any further problems with software updates.

Finally got a spare moment to sit behind my dear Mac to write to you about the last security update. I’ve installed it right after I noticed the bouncing software update icon on the server and all is still running as expected. The updates are mostly for possible attacks on your Airport cards. I use Airport extensively and therefore needed the update. Read more about the update here.
